George Street Playhouse, located directly across Livingston Avenue from The Heldrich, is a fully professional, nationally recognized regional theatre presenting a five show season from October through May. The Playhouse’s season is made up of a wide variety ranging from farce to thought-provoking contemporary drama to musicals. Called “the #1 Place to See Live Theatre,” by Upstage Magazine, the intimate 350-seat auditorium offers full views of the stage from every angle. The theatre is home to Broadway-caliber artists and designers, who include Tyne Daly, Marlo Thomas, Chita Rivera, Amy Irving, Jack Klugman, and many others.

Founded in 1974, the Playhouse has been well represented by numerous productions both on and off-Broadway – recent productions include the new musical It Shoulda Been You, starring Tyne Daly and directed by David Hyde Pierce, that is scheduled for Broadway in Spring 2013, the Outer Critics’ Circle Best Musical Award-winner The Toxic Avenger (written by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan), the Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk and Drama League nominated production of The Spitfire Grill and the recent Broadway hit and Tony® and Pulitzer Prize winning play Proof by David Auburn, which was developed at GSP during the 1999 Next Stage Series of new plays.
